iPhone originally prototyped with keyboard

02 May 2012 – Tony Fadell, credited for helping bring the iPod to the market says that Apple originally tested three different kinds of iPhone prototypes before settling for the one we know today. today.

Fadell said that hardware keyboard was one of the major considerations, a design which he personally favoured. Jon Rubenstein, who also helped in making the iPod successful, also preferred the keyboard option:
Rubenstein and Jobs could not agree on the iPhone’s strategy wrt the Keyboard. This tells me that Rubinstein has a separate but perhaps also compelling vision on how the keyboard needs to be incorporated into smartphones. I can’t wait to see what that vision entails!
Rubenstein eventually left Apple and joined Palm, bringing the multitouch and hardware keyboard equipped Palm Pre to the market.
